The Election Commission of India (ECI) has declared the dates for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. The polls will be held in three phases for Jammu and Kashmir and a single phase for Haryana. This announcement marks a significant moment, particularly for Jammu and Kashmir, where assembly elections are being held for the first time since 2014, following the repeal of Article 370.
Jammu and Kashmir: A Three-Phase Election
The elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to take place over three phases:
- First Phase: September 18, 2024
- Second Phase: September 25, 2024
- Third Phase: October 1, 2024
These phases will cover 90 assembly constituencies in the Union Territory. According to Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, there are 87.09 lakh registered voters, including around 3.71 lakh first-time voters.
Security has been tightened across the region to ensure a smooth electoral process. This election holds particular significance as it is the first since Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into a Union Territory after the revocation of Article 370 in August 2019.
In the 2014 assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 25 seats, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won 28 seats, the Congress gained 12 seats, the National Conference (NC) secured 15, and others took 7 seats.
Haryana: Single-Phase Polling
In Haryana, the assembly election will be conducted in a single phase on October 1, 2024. The state has around 2.01 crore registered voters, who will cast their votes across 90 assembly constituencies. The vote counting for both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana will take place on October 4, 2024.
The BJP, which won 40 seats in the 2019 Haryana assembly elections, formed the government in alliance with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and seven independent MLAs. However, the political landscape has shifted since then, with former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar resigning and becoming a minister in the Modi 3.0 government, while Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala of the JJP left the alliance before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
A Critical Political Battle
The elections in both states are expected to be closely watched, with the BJP and Congress competing fiercely in Haryana, and regional parties like the National Conference and PDP going head-to-head in Jammu and Kashmir.
In Jammu and Kashmir, the INDIA alliance partners—NC and PDP—have decided not to form a pre-poll alliance and will contest the elections independently. The NC, led by former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah, and the PDP, headed by Mehbooba Mufti, have already competed against each other in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections for the three seats in Kashmir.
The outcome of these assembly elections will be significant in shaping the political landscape of both regions, with the results set to be announced on October 4, 2024.
