On Sunday, Donald Trump was the target of what the FBI is describing as an assassination attempt at his West Palm Beach golf club in Florida, just nine weeks after a previous attack. Law enforcement revealed that Secret Service agents opened fire on an armed individual hiding in bushes near the edge of the course, close to where Trump was playing. Trump later assured the public that he was unharmed and in good health, while authorities confirmed that a suspect had been detained.
The incident occurred when Secret Service agents, positioned a few holes away, spotted an AK-style rifle barrel protruding from the bushes about 400 yards from Trump’s location. An agent fired at the suspect, who fled the scene in an SUV, leaving behind the rifle, two backpacks, a scope, and a GoPro camera. The suspect was later apprehended in a neighboring county. Officials noted that the man remained calm during the arrest and did not resist. In an email to his supporters, Trump acknowledged the gunfire nearby, reassuring them that he was safe and vowing that nothing would stop him. He had returned to Florida after a West Coast tour, including a rally in Las Vegas and a Utah fundraiser, though no public events were scheduled for Sunday.
Following the assassination attempt in July, security around Trump has intensified, including the use of dump trucks for protection outside Trump Tower in New York and bulletproof glass at outdoor events. President Biden has also directed his team to ensure that the Secret Service has the necessary resources to protect Trump. The suspect, identified as Ryan Routh from Hawaii, is a known Democrat supporter, with records showing he has made 19 donations since 2019, totaling over $140. The Palm Beach County sheriff pointed out that if Trump were still president, the entire golf course would have had full security coverage, but as a former president, only certain areas are protected by the Secret Service.
