Former Sirsa MP Ashok Tanwar, a former president of the Haryana Congress, stepped down from the party in 2019 and rejoined the Congress party during an election rally in Mahendergarh on Thursday, where senior leaders Rahul Gandhi and Bhupinder Singh Hooda welcomed him.

Tanwar, who previously served as Haryana Congress president, had resigned from the party in 2019 after a fallout. He subsequently joined the Trinamool Congress in November 2021, switched to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in April 2022, and earlier this year aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the country’s “transformation” under his governance.

Tanwar rejoined Congress just hours after campaigning for a BJP candidate in Safidon, Jind district. As Rahul Gandhi concluded his speech, an announcement was made signaling Tanwar’s return to Congress. He then appeared on stage, greeted Gandhi and Hooda, and was warmly welcomed back into the party.

Tanwar’s political journey saw him defeat INLD’s Sita Ram by 35,499 votes in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections but lose to Charanjeet Singh Rori of INLD by 1.15 lakh votes in 2014 and to BJP’s Sunita Duggal by over 3 lakh votes in 2019. His return to Congress is seen as a boost for the party in Haryana ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.
