On Monday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out raids at several Ranchi locations in relation to the Virendra Ram case. A substantial sum of money has been seized from the domestic assistant of Sanjiv Lal, the Minister of Rural Development for Jharkhand Alamgir Alam’s personal assistant.
According to sources from the Enforcement Directorate, the exact amount of the confiscated cash is likely to be between ₹20 and ₹30 crore. It has yet to be counted. The bulk of the money is in denominations of ₹500, and investigators have also found some jewelry with it, according to PTI.
Wads of cash notes were seen on camera strewn throughout a room in the domestic helper’s home, which is purportedly connected to the private secretary of Rural Development Minister Alamgir Alam.
Alam, a 70-year-old Congressman, stated in an interview with PTI that he has no official information regarding this so far. Additionally, he mentioned that he has been watching TV, and it came as a shock to him when the premise was linked to the official PS (private secretary) provided to Alam by the government. Alam is a member of the Jharkhand legislature and represents the Pakur seat.
The authorities state that over Rs 20 crores have been counted so far from the money found during the operation, and the counting continues.
The searches were conducted in relation to a money laundering investigation against Virendra K. Ram, the former head engineer of the Rural Development Department, who was detained by the investigative agency in the previous year.
In February 2023, the ED arrested Veerendra K. Ram in connection with a money laundering case involving suspected flaws in the implementation of certain initiatives. Ram is accused of accumulating property worth 100 crores. He was found in possession of a pen drive that included purported transaction details with certain lawmakers in Jharkhand.
The agency had claimed in a statement released in April of last year that Veerendra Kumar Ram, who was employed as chief engineer in the Rural Works Department in Ranchi, had generated proceeds of crime in the name of commission from contractors instead of awarding them tenders, after it had attached the officer’s assets worth Rs 39 crores.
This video of the ED raid was shared by Nishikant Dubet, who is an MP of Bharatiya Janata Party from Jharkhand’s Godda, well aware of the fact that the premises are linked to Sanjiv Lal, PS to state minister Alamgir Alam.
