A serving Army jawan, Rahul Kumar, was apprehended by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Meerut police near the Rapid Rail station in Meerut on Tuesday night. Kumar, a resident of Nagli Azad village and posted with the counter-terrorism battalion at the Mechanised Infantry Centre and School in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, was found in possession of 70 live cartridges meant for an AK-47 rifle.
According to the FIR, authorities received information about a man travelling in a car with illegal cartridges. A joint operation was conducted, and Kumar’s vehicle was intercepted near the Rapid Rail station. During a search, 70 AK-47 rounds were recovered, and Kumar was taken into custody.
Kumar revealed during initial questioning that he had retained the cartridges from a previous deployment in Jammu and Kashmir and had brought them home while on leave. He claimed to have intended to hand them over to a friend in Meerut who had allegedly lost his cartridges.
The matter is being investigated thoroughly, and a parallel inquiry has been initiated by military authorities. Officials are probing how the rounds were smuggled out and whether others are linked to the suspected illegal transfer.
