The army base has been sealed off to all movement, and a search operation is underway. On Monday morning, a soldier was injured when terrorists fired from a distance near the Sunjawan military camp, the largest army base in Jammu. According to defence spokesperson Lt Col. Suneel Bartwal, the attack occurred between 10 and 10:30 am from a standoff distance. The army base has since been sealed off, and a search operation is currently underway.
In February 2018, JeM terrorists attacked the same military camp, resulting in the deaths of six soldiers, a civilian, and three terrorists, with around 20 others, including soldiers and civilians, injured. The latest attack near the base comes just days after security forces killed three terrorists in two separate encounters in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir—two in Machhal and one in the Tangdhar sector.
Meanwhile, another encounter occurred in Jammu’s Rajouri district, where security forces initiated a search operation to locate terrorists hiding in the Lathi area. This operation began at 9:30 pm in the villages of Kheri Mohra Lathi and Danthal.
These incidents coincide with the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, where the first phase of nominations has already been filed. The elections will take place in three phases—on September 18, September 25, and October 1—with results to be announced on October 4, according to the Election Commission of India. The region has experienced several encounters this year, prompting a reassessment of the security situation by the country’s administrative and defense leadership. At least five personnel and seven civilians have died in terror attacks in Kashmir, while 14 security personnel and 11 civilians have lost their lives in other extremist incidents in Jammu.
