October 21, 2024: A violent attack occurred at a camp housing employees of an infrastructure company near Sonamarg, situated on the Srinagar-Leh national highway in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The assault resulted in the tragic deaths of seven workers and raised significant concerns regarding security and safety in the region.
Reports indicate that at least two militants, heavily armed, executed the attack. The militants targeted multiple areas within the camp, including the mess hall where workers gathered. The deceased workers were identified as Faheem Nasir (Bihar), Anil Shukhla (Madhya Pradesh), Dr. Shahnawaz (Budgam, Kashmir), and Mohammad Hanif (Bihar).
“It seems they (militants) were heavily armed and were at the camp office for quite a good amount of time,” a police officer said. “From what we hear from the workers, it seems the attack was aimed at causing maximum casualties.”
A police officer stated that the assailants spent a considerable amount of time at the camp office before initiating the attack, indicating premeditation and a tactical approach to maximize the impact.
Local police and security forces responded promptly to the incident. Eyewitness accounts suggest chaos as the attack unfolded, leading to panic among the workers.
A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) was dispatched for forensic analysis and is expected to take over the investigation. This transition signifies the attack’s serious implications for national security and terrorism in the region. The investigation will likely focus on identifying the militants, their affiliations, and the broader networks supporting such acts of violence.
This incident marks the first major attack targeting an infrastructure project in Jammu and Kashmir. Previous attacks have predominantly focused on security forces or civilian targets but have avoided large-scale infrastructure, which is critical for economic development.
The attack raises critical concerns regarding the safety of workers in infrastructure projects, particularly in areas with known militant activities. Enhanced security measures will likely be a focal point for both local authorities and the companies operating in these regions. This event could deter future investments in infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir, further complicating the region’s economic development and stability.
