Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Review

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a testament to the enduring power of the franchise, delivering a visually stunning spectacle that blends thoughtful storytelling with action. Set in a post-Caesar era, the film explores new territories while maintaining the essence of what made its predecessors so compelling. We get to follow a new character, Noa, who seeks revenge on Proximus Caesar for attacking his clan and killing his father. He discovers a human named Mae, who has her own objective not disclosed extensively by the film.
The film tries its best to welcome new audiences to the franchise while also honoring the fans and the previous trilogy. Director Wes Ball, known for his work on the Maze Runner series, deftly navigates the narrative, balancing world-building with character development. Although this time the action takes a backseat, the drama manages to engage and intrigue. The screenplay by Josh Friedman injects a refreshing sense of adventure into the series while also exploring themes of power, history, and the dangers of romanticizing the past. Though the film cannot match the emotional weight of the previous films.
The cast delivers standout performances with Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, with the computer-generated primates stealing the show. Wes Ball has been known for his well-standing experience with visual effects and his inspiration from James Cameron’s Avatar. The visual effects are truly remarkable, with the apes rendered in breathtaking detail. The photorealistic apes feel totally believable. The sight of ruins of buildings and how nature has taken over it steals each frame. Though these sights took a good screen time, which added to the lengthy runtime and lack of narration. You can take into consideration that the film has earned its spot in the Oscars nomination for best visual effects.
The sound design enhances the immersive experience, bringing us to the center of the peaceful post-apocalyptic world, while the editing keeps the pace brisk despite the film’s lengthy runtime. The film’s score, though not particularly memorable as Michael Giacchino’s score from the previous films, effectively underscores the action on screen. Some moments that required the score to provide the depth feel bleak. But certainly, the score has its moments to shine in the action sequences.
In the end, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” may not reach the lofty heights of its predecessors, but it still stands as a worthy addition to the franchise. With its well-crafted characters, rich visuals, and themes which blend almost perfectly with the long runtime. Fans of the series will find much to enjoy here, while newcomers will be drawn in by the epic scale and spectacle. It is a solid start to summer blockbusters and delivers on its promise of thrilling entertainment.
