On Sunday, the 14th edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne came to a close with the directorial work of Anurag Kashyap, titled “Kennedy.” The film garnered critical acclaim earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and once again captured the hearts and minds of the audience at IFFM. The closing event was graced by the presence of the film’s lead actors, Rahul Bhatt and Sunny Leone.
Commencing on August 11th, the annual film gala began with the sports drama “Ghoomer,” directed by R Balki. The film starred Saiyami Kher and Abhishek Bachchan and served as the opening film for the festival. Reflecting on the opportunity to present “Kennedy” at the festival, Leone expressed her gratitude, stating, “First of all, I am grateful to be here. Presenting films to various communities holds great significance, and Melbourne, in particular, is a crucial destination for us in relation to ‘Kennedy.’ We take immense pride in being part of IFFM and contributing to this platform.” The movie features Rahul Bhatt as the titular insomniac ex-cop, who becomes entwined in a corrupt system while seeking redemption, as outlined in the official plotline.
Prior to this, Kashyap had shared his delight, saying, “I am delighted that ‘Kennedy’ is chosen as the closing film at IFFM. It marks our debut at an Indian film festival on a global scale, and I am eagerly anticipating the audience’s response. I will personally be present to witness the reactions, and I am confident that the film will be well-received, much like the global audience it has reached thus far.” Directed by Kashyap, “Kennedy” stars Sunny Leone, Rahul Bhatt, and Abhilash Thapliyal in leading roles. The film revolves around an insomniac ex-policeman, presumed dead but still operating within a corrupt system, as he endeavors to find redemption.
The closing ceremony, held on Sunday night, was a star-studded extravaganza, where Indian and Australian attendees gathered to witness the culmination of this cinematic celebration. The 2023 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne stood out as one of the most significant editions to date, welcoming some of the most prominent figures from Indian cinema, including Rani Mukerji, Kartik Aaryan, Prithvi Konanur, the team behind “Sita Ramam,” and Karan Johar, among others. This year’s festival showcased over 100 films spanning 22 languages, introducing unique narratives and talents to Australian audiences.
