CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) raids over the last year have brought about a dozen cases of corruption to the forefront, indicating growing corruption and declining supervision. The 4th cop of the Delhi Police has been arrested this week under the charges of demanding and accepting bribery from the party to withdraw criminal charges against him.
CBI arrested yet another Delhi Police Officer under the charges of demanding and accepting bribery in return for withdrawing criminal charges against the accused. The police officer demanded money from a company’s accountant who later called PCR and alleged the police officer for demanding bribery from him.
In the last week, CBI booked three other Delhi Police officers under the charges of bribery. Two cops posted at Sonia Vihar police station were arrested in a ‘bribe-for-construction’ while the latter posted at Sagarpur police station was arrested for demanding Rs. one lakh from the accused to avoid arrest. The recent case took place in Narela wherein the victim, a 23-year-old accountant, was demanded an Rs. 10 lakh bribe against withdrawing charges for him. The victim made a call to the PCR and alleged the respective police officer of having demanded money from him. The victim had been charged with embezzlement, for which the police officer made a deal to provide relief.
An officer from the probe responded to the incident, saying, “During the course of inquiry, the statement of the complainant was recorded and after consideration, an FIR for extortion has been filed against the cop.” The cop, who is a sub-inspector, has been suspended and sent to the district lines for punishment, another senior officer confirmed.
Statistical data provides insights into the growing corruption and crumbling supervision, as there has been a series of CBI raids against Delhi Police officers and police stations. The data shows that over a dozen police officers were charged in the year 2023. In November, the CBI arrested two sub-inspectors posted at Barakhamba Road police station in New Delhi for taking bribes of Rs. 4.5 lakhs. South Delhi police stations like Hauz Khas and Maidangarhi also witnessed a series of CBI raids in the last three months, and a bunch of cops accused were arrested. In September, the agency arrested a Delhi Police SI posted at Maurice-nagar. In July, a head constable in Mangolpuri was arrested for taking a bribe of Rs 50,000 for illegal parking, and in May too, at least three such cases took place.
These cases pose a serious question to the supervising authorities of the police agencies, as a result of which the Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora has been asked by the Union Home Ministry to have zero tolerance for corruption cases, said the sources.
