In a rare and controversial incident during the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews faced a surprising dismissal after being timed out in a match against Bangladesh. This unprecedented occurrence marked Mathews as the first cricketer ever to be dismissed in this manner.
The incident took place at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on November 6, as Mathews took the crease at number 6. However, his arrival at the wicket was marred by an issue with his helmet’s strap, which delayed his readiness to face the bowler within the stipulated time frame.
As per the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) rules, a batter must be prepared to face the bowler within three minutes from the fall of a wicket. In Mathews’ case, the Bangladesh players appealed to the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Richard Illingworth, citing the delay. Following their appeal, the umpires deliberated and eventually dismissed Mathews, upholding the rules related to timed out dismissals.
The MCC rulebook states, “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, timed out.”
However, it’s essential to note that the MCC updated the rule in September 2022, reducing the time limit for readiness in Tests and ODIs to two minutes, while maintaining the 90-second threshold in T20Is.
Mathews’ dismissal stirred a divisive response within the cricketing community. Some viewed Bangladesh’s decision to appeal for a timed out dismissal as a breach of the spirit of the game, while others argued that it showcased a profound understanding of the rules. The incident has sparked discussions on the relevance and fairness of the timed out rule in modern cricket, with calls for potential revisions or clarifications to avoid such contentious situations in the future.
