Andre Braugher, Star of ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine,’ Dies at 61
Fans were left shocked when the news of the passing away of Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s star, Andre Braugher, was announced yesterday. The 61-year-old passed away after a brief illness.
Braugher was born in Chicago and graduated from Stanford University. He later went on to attend the Juilliard School for drama. In his note-worthy acting career, he had participated in several acting projects and taken on diverse roles. His dynamic acting capabilities helped him win accolades and several nominations.
Braugher’s breakout film was director Ed Zwick’s 1989 film “Glory,” where he appeared as a soldier in a black Union regiment in the American civil war. Braugher’s television career flourished when he took on the role of detective Frank Pembleton in the gritty police show “Homicide: Life on the Street.” The actor’s other film credits include notable ones like Primal Fear, Salt, and City of Angels. In his career, he received about 11 Emmy nominations and won two of them for his roles in “Homicide” and “Thief,” in which he played the leader of a heist crew. He had most recently starred in “She Said,” a biographical drama.
Fans remember Braugher for portraying the roles of several kinds of police officers during his career in dramatic and comedic roles. However, he is best remembered for his role as Ray Holt in the NBC sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” for which he was nominated for the Emmy Awards.
His character’s stoic personality and deep sense of humanity made him an instant fan favourite of the show. Along with this, his onscreen pairing with Andy Samberg was also loved by his fans.
His sudden passing left many heartbroken. Like many, his co-stars took to social media to post heartfelt messages in his memory.
Actor Marc Evan Jackson, who had played the on-screen husband of Braugher in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shared a picture of them hugging while on set and wearing their wedding rings. He captioned the post on X as “O Captain. My Captain.” Chelsea Peretti, who played the role of Gina Linetti in the show, wrote that she was “forever lucky to have gone on such a journey” with Braugher. Dirk Blocker, known for his role as Michael Hitchcock in the show, wrote that he was devastated upon learning this news. He said that the nine years of working with him and just being in his presence were a blessing to him.
The director of Brooklyn Nine-Nine Ryan Case posted a thread of her favourite memories with Braugher on X and wrote, “If there weren’t men like Andre in this business, I probably would’ve quit it a long time ago.” She went on to add that she now finds the world worse without him. The television network NBC also paid a tribute to Braugher and described him as “the actor that others in the profession would always aspire to be.”.
There had been reports that he had been cast as the male lead in a Netflix-backed murder mystery titled “The Residence,” which was set at the White House. His passing was confirmed by his publicist, Jennifer Allen. He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, whom he met on the sets of “Homicide,” and his three sons.
