A fishing vessel collided with an Indian Navy submarine approximately 70 nautical miles off the Goa coast on Thursday evening, triggering an extensive rescue operation to locate two missing crew members, according to news agency PTI. An Indian Navy spokesperson stated, “An Indian fishing vessel, the Marthoma, carrying a crew of 13, reportedly collided with an Indian Naval unit on November 21, around 70 nm northwest of Goa.” While 11 crew members were rescued, the search for the two missing individuals continues, coordinated with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai.
The Navy has launched a high-level investigation into the incident. Additional resources, including those from the Coast Guard, have been mobilized and redirected to assist in the rescue efforts. The Navy deployed six ships and multiple surveillance aircraft as part of the operation.
The collision involved a Scorpene-class submarine, a critical component of India’s naval fleet, known for its advanced stealth capabilities, low noise levels, and versatile functions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine-laying, and area surveillance.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, and no further information has been provided about the condition of the missing crew members or the fishing vessel.
Earlier this year, in August, a similar incident occurred off the Tamil Nadu coast when a fishing boat collided with a Sri Lankan naval vessel, resulting in the death of one fisherman.
