Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticised the Congress party and Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) for allegedly prioritising vote bank politics over national security concerns. During a rally in Durgapur, West Bengal, Shah accused both parties of remaining silent when terrorism struck during the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) era, suggesting this was due to their focus on vote bank politics. He also claimed that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee avoided attending the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya out of concern for offending her “infiltrator” vote bank.
“Mamata Banerjee and her nephew were invited to the Ram Mandir Prana Pratishtha, but they did not go. Do you know why they did not go? Let me tell you, they are afraid of their vote bank. These people who have come here by infiltration are their (TMC) vote bank, Mamata Didi is afraid of this,” said Shah.
The home minister further criticised the TMC for fostering a culture of corruption in Durgapur and accused Mamata Banerjee’s administration of enabling a surge in criminal activities in the industrial town. He stated that the opposition had neither prioritised public safety nor national security, emphasising that TMC relied on “cut money” and supported a vote bank of infiltrators.
“Didi has been campaigning for 15 days to defeat BJP in Durgapur. It is my challenge that she can stay here for 5 years but cannot win Durgapur. Didi has opened a new industry of crime in the industrial town of Durgapur,” Shah remarked.
Additionally, Shah accused the opposition INDIA bloc of widespread corruption, pointing to various instances of cash seizures from the residences of ministers in states governed by opposition parties. He claimed that the INDIA bloc was involved in a corruption scandal worth Rs. 12 lakh crores.
“From the houses of Didi’s ministers, cash worth ₹50 crores was recovered. In Jharkhand, from the house of a Congress MP, ₹350 crores of cash was recovered,” Shah said, referring to recent incidents of “unaccounted” cash discovered during searches in various locations. He also mentioned a specific case in Jharkhand, where a large sum of money was found at a residence linked to a state minister’s secretary.
“Just last night, in Jharkhand, ₹30 crores were recovered from the house of a minister,” he said.
West Bengal, which elects 42 Members of Parliament, is voting in all seven phases of the ongoing election. The first two phases of polling for six Lok Sabha seats in the state took place on April 19 and 26.
