Three distinct complaints were filed by the police in Delhi, Assam, and Maharashtra in relation to a doctored video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s address on reservations in Telangana on April 23. At least one individual was arrested in this respect, a Congress official from Assam.
On Monday, the Delhi Police served notice to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and four other Congress office-bearers in the state under Section 91 (summons to provide documents) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), drawing them into the controversy.
The Telangana Congress uploaded the first altered video to X [previously Twitter]. The official stated that, as the party’s state president, Mr. Reddy is responsible for explaining the video’s origin. If Mr. Reddy fails to show up on the appointed date, another notification will be sent. The insider added that a Telugu user who fact-checked the video on X that same day will be requested to participate in the investigation to find the video.
The Telangana Congress uploaded the manipulated video to X on April 27, and by April 29, it was no longer accessible.
In the altered video, Mr. Shah is heard stating that the BJP wants to do away with reservations for Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes, while in the original video, he states that the party wants to do away with Telangana’s 4% Muslim reservation.
The BJP senior leader, Amit Shah, claimed that unconstitutional Muslim reservation in Telangana would end if the BJP formed the government. Also, it was stated in the original video that this is the right of STs, SCs, and OBCs. And when the BJP government . forms in Telangana, they will get right back there. This is a small section of the speech given by Mr. Amit Shah in Chevella, Telangana, for the election campaign.
Speaking at a rally in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, Mr. Reddy responded to the Delhi Police’s FIR by saying he wasn’t “scared.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Home Minister have so far used the Enforcement Directorate, Central Bureau of Investigation, and Income Tax Department to win elections, but Reddy Saif learned that a Delhi Police team went to the Telangana Congress party’s office because someone had posted something on social media. They are not afraid, he added, adding that they came to arrest the Telangana Congress president and the Telangana CM, which means the PM is using Delhi Police to win elections now.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, announced on X that Reetam Singh, a state resident, had been taken into custody by the police about the fictitious video. A high-ranking Assam Police official also verified the detention of Mr. Singh, a resident of Ulubari and an attorney at the Guwahati High Court, who is 31 years old. He is currently the Congress’s Assam unit’s State War Room Coordinator.
Additionally, to identify the person who first uploaded the video, the Delhi Police has written to Facebook, X, and other social networking sites. Another insider stated they are looking into the people who distributed the video widely as well as its source.
A Ministry of Home Affairs official filed a complaint alleging that the doctored video was spreading misleading information with the intention of creating disharmony among communities. It is most likely to affect public tranquilly and cause public order issues. The Delhi Police opened a formal complaint in the case on Sunday.
The Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act, specifically Sections 153 (causing provocation with intention to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc.), 465 (forgery), 469 (forgery to harm the reputation of any party), and 171G (publishing false statements with intent to affect the result of an election), are the legal bases under which Delhi Police filed the First Information Report (FIR).
Similar sections were also used to record cases by the Mumbai Police and the Assam Police. 17 handles on X that are members of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), the Congress party, and its supporters are included in the Mumbai lawsuit.
At a rally in Karnataka, Mr. Modi made fun of Congress leaders who were purportedly responsible for posting the doctored film by claiming that those who lost elections were utilising artificial intelligence (AI) and technology to make phoney movies and propagate false information. The PM, Narendra Modi, asked the Election Commission to prosecute those accountable.
In response to the accusations, Ramchandra Reddy, a legal advisor and spokesperson for the Congress, stated that they have received the Delhi Police’s notice requesting information and proof from Satish Manne, the head of social media, and are presently reviewing the contents of the FIR document.
