The Aligarh Municipal Corporation in Uttar Pradesh has passed a unanimous resolution to rename the city as “Harigarh.” The proposal will now be sent to the state government for approval. This move follows the pattern of several other name changes in Uttar Pradesh, where cities like Allahabad became Prayagraj, Mughal Sarai was renamed Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar, and Faizabad became Ayodhya.

The demand to change Aligarh’s name to Harigarh has a long history dating back to the 1970s when the Aligarh unit of the Hana Sangh party expressed this desire. Some VHP leaders have asserted that Harigarh was the original name of the place according to Hindu mythology. However, the historical name of Aligarh has been ‘Kol’ or ‘Koil’ since the 13th century CE, and it was renamed Aligarh in the 1740s CE by Mughal commander Mirza Najaf.

Aligarh’s mayor, Prashant Singhal, said that the proposal to change the name had received unanimous support from the council. He expressed hope that the administration would consider the proposal and fulfill the demand to change Aligarh to Harigarh, which has been a long-standing request.

If the state government approves the name change, Aligarh will join the list of cities with new names in Uttar Pradesh, reflecting a trend of renaming places with historical or cultural significance.
