The Delhi police on Thursday dismantled an Al-Qaeda module, arresting 11 individuals and detaining three others across Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. The operation, conducted in collaboration with local police forces, involved at least 15 raids following intelligence inputs. This followed the registration of a case under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on July 15, leading to an extensive investigation into the suspects, as reported by PTI.
According to the police, six individuals were arrested in Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi while undergoing weapons training. The arrested suspects, all from Jharkhand, include Hasan Ansari, Enamul Ansari, Altaf Ansari, Arshad Khan, Umar Farooq, and Shahbaz Ansari, who had been residing in Rajasthan for several days.
In Ranchi, Jharkhand, five more individuals were apprehended: Ishtiyaq Ahmed, Motiur, Rizwan, Mufti Rahmatullah, and Faizan. Additionally, three individuals were detained in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, for questioning. The police recovered various items from the raided locations, including an AK-47 rifle, a .38 bore revolver, live cartridges, a dummy INSAS rifle, an air rifle, a hand grenade, and several other materials indicative of terrorist activity.
The Al-Qaeda module, led by Dr. Ishtiyaq of Ranchi, Jharkhand, was reportedly aiming to establish a ‘caliphate’ and carry out significant terrorist actions within the country, according to the Delhi police. There are suspicions that the module was planning an attack in northern India during the upcoming festive season. A senior police officer involved in the operation noted that the module had been active for the past few months, with its members connecting through social media. The members had received training, including weapon handling, in various locations, such as the jungles of the Aravalli Hills in Rajasthan.
