The forthcoming Bollywood movie “Oh My God 2” (OMG 2), featuring Akshay Kumar and Pankaj Tripathi, has stirred discussions due to its divergent certifications in the two nations. While the movie has secured a 12A certificate in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), allowing adolescents aged 12 and above to watch it, the certification in India stands at ‘A – Adults Only’.

In contrast to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the UAE has cleared the film with minimal censorship and alterations. There is only one edit mandated by the UAE, related to frontal nudity, and this edit aligns with the decision made by the Indian Censor Board. However, the key distinction lies in the fact that the CBFC required the filmmakers to implement around 34 modifications to secure an Adult certificate.

Curiously, in India, “OMG 2” has obtained an ‘A – Adults Only’ certificate from the censor board. The movie was approved after undergoing 27 alterations and numerous adjustments. These changes encompass a significant revision to the portrayal of the character God Shiv, presenting him as a devotee and messenger of God. Additionally, a dialogue was added: ‘Nandi Mere Bhakt… Jo Agya Prabhu.’ Scenes featuring frontal nudity were replaced with visuals of Naga Sadhus, and a poster of Mood X contraceptives on a billboard was omitted.

CBFC reviewed “OMG 2” in July of this year, taking a proactive approach by referring it to the reviewing committee. This decision was reportedly made to preempt any potential backlash similar to what followed the release of “Adipurush” in June 2023. “Adipurush” faced controversies regarding dialogues, character depictions, deviations from the Ramayana narrative, and subpar utilization of visual effects.

This certification disparity between India and the UAE, as exemplified here, underscores the divergent mentalities of their respective citizens. While India chose to censor the portrayal of sadhus to achieve a ‘family-friendly’ label, resulting in an adult certification, the UAE sanctioned the film for a broader audience. This discrepancy highlights a lack of comprehensive understanding and scientific temper among citizens concerning such subject matter.

“Oh My God 2” is scheduled for release on August 11, 2023, alongside Sunny Deol’s “Gadar 2” and Rajnikanth’s “Jailer.”
