On the occasion of the 77th Independence Day, actor Akshay Kumar has confirmed that he has received Indian citizenship from the Government of India, as stated on his social media accounts. Previously, Kumar had faced criticism for holding Canadian citizenship for a certain period.

Kumar shared a post on both his Twitter and Instagram accounts, stating, “Dil aur citizenship, dono Hindustani. Happy Independence Day! Jai Hind!” accompanied by a photograph of the Certificate of Registration issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The certificate indicates, “This is to certify that the person whose particulars are given below has been registered as a citizen of India under the provision of Section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955,” along with his personal details, including his “Previous Nationality,” which was Canadian.

Numerous individuals reacted to this news, including actor-director Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, who has collaborated with Kumar on three projects since 2018. Dwivedi remarked, “He is a person who consistently takes the forefront in supporting national causes – whether it be related to COVID or any other calamity or cause. Yet, he has still faced condemnation. Why does such animosity persist? It is simply because he is our national hero; that’s why people seek to tarnish his reputation. He acquired Canadian citizenship due to a friend’s suggestion to join his cargo business. However, then Akshay’s films began to gain popularity. There was no other underlying motive. But was it genuinely necessary to vilify him?”

According to the Constitution of India, holding both Indian citizenship and citizenship of a foreign country concurrently is not permitted. Following the recommendation of the High-Level Committee on the Indian Diaspora, the Government of India opted to grant Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI), commonly referred to as ‘dual citizenship.’

While Kumar has retained his Indian citizenship, he faced criticism from some quarters, labeling him as “Canadian Kumar” and “Chakki” (a playful twist on his nickname, Akki), among other things. Kumar openly expressed his sadness regarding this matter during an interview with Sudhir Chaudhary earlier this year.
