Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav urged Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar to withdraw support from the Modi government. His call came after authorities in Lucknow prevented a socialist from garlanding the statue of Jayaprakash Narayan, sparking protests by Samajwadi Party workers. Nitish Kumar’s JDU is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
Akhilesh highlighted that many socialists, including Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, are supporting the government. He urged Nitish to break ties with the government that disrespects Jayaprakash Narayan, a Gandhian freedom fighter who opposed the Indira Gandhi government during the Emergency.
Akhilesh criticized the government for allegedly conspiring to sell the Jayaprakash Narayan museum. He questioned the government’s commitment to protecting the Constitution, given its actions regarding the museum. Despite the restrictions, Akhilesh’s party members paid tribute to Jayaprakash Narayan on the road.
In response, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi accused Akhilesh of political theatrics. She suggested he sever ties with parties that Jayaprakash Narayan opposed during the Emergency, while the Lucknow Development Authority cited security concerns as the reason for restricting access to the site.
