Chandigarh: Air raid sirens echoed through Chandigarh on Friday morning, triggered by the Air Force Station amid fears of a potential aerial strike. Residents were instructed to remain indoors and avoid balconies, as per a warning issued by the Deputy Commissioner.
This alert followed a citywide emergency blackout implemented Thursday night around 9:30 p.m. Sirens were sounded and electricity was cut off as authorities urged citizens to switch off all lights and stay inside. “Avoid rooftops and remain indoors,” the advisory emphasised.
While many complied, some street and solar lights stayed on, and vehicle movement continued despite the advisory. Earlier, civil defence systems had been strengthened, with plans to increase air raid sirens from 20 to 50. Satellite phones were also introduced to tackle possible communication failures, and additional gear was issued to defence personnel.
In neighbouring Mohali, a two-hour power outage began around 9:30 p.m. in response to intelligence warnings of a possible Pakistani threat. DC Komal Mittal called it a safety precaution, urging residents to limit movement and keep lights off.
Panchkula, however, experienced confusion due to a lack of clear siren alerts. Many homes and public lights remained lit initially until awareness spread via social media, leading to gradual compliance. Officials confirmed the blackout continued through the night.
