The preliminary report on the Air India plane crash that killed 260 people has raised more questions than answers. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operating flight AI 171 to London Gatwick, experienced a catastrophic failure of both engines shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad.
Aviation Expert’s Concerns
Aviation expert and former test pilot Anoop Singh Mer has flagged the possibility of pilot error or even suicide. He also cited the rapid and simultaneous shutdown of both engines. “The report indicates that both engines shut down due to fuel cutoff switches being moved from ‘RUN’ to ‘CUTOFF’ within one second of each other. This is a highly unusual and concerning scenario,” Mer said.
Investigation Findings
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) report notes that the pilots were medically fit and adequately rested. However, the sudden and simultaneous shutdown of both engines has raised suspicions about potential pilot involvement.
Cockpit Voice Recordings
The cockpit voice recordings reveal a conversation between the pilots, with one asking, “Why did you cut off?” and the other responding, “I didn’t.” This exchange has sparked concerns about possible pilot error or intentional action.
Next Steps
The investigation is ongoing, with further analysis and examination of the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder. The AAIB is working closely with international aviation authorities. Including the US NTSB, Boeing, and GE, to determine the cause of the crash.
The Air India plane crash has raised serious questions about aviation safety and the potential for human error. As the investigation continues, the focus will be on determining the root cause of the crash and implementing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
