AI in Newsrooms: JNU Scholar Dr. Shubh Gupta Urges Ethical, Informed Use of Technology in Journalism at DU Lecture

Delhi School of Journalism
New Delhi, September 25, 2025: Artificial Intelligence may be transforming the world of newsrooms, but with opportunity comes responsibility. This was the central message of a thought-provoking lecture delivered by Dr. Shubh Gupta, faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru University, at the Delhi School of Journalism, University of Delhi, on Thursday.
Speaking on the theme “AI as a Learning Partner: Opportunities and Responsibilities in Journalism,” Dr. Gupta argued that while AI tools can enhance efficiency, creativity, and audience reach, they also pose pressing challenges around ethics, accountability, and digital inequality. “Journalists must learn to adopt AI critically—using it to strengthen the profession rather than surrendering to it blindly,” he said.

Dr. Gupta, whose academic journey spans Computer Science, Sociology, and a Ph.D. on the social impacts of AI, offered an interdisciplinary lens to the discussion. Drawing from his doctoral fieldwork in Delhi schools, he illustrated how AI is already reshaping education and social behavior. He also referred to his recent report on the Delhi education model—an argument from which was picked up by the Hon’ble Prime Minister during Pariksha Pe Charcha.
The session struck a chord with students, who engaged Dr. Gupta in a lively Q&A. Questions ranged from the risks of algorithmic bias to the role of human judgment in an AI-driven media ecosystem. Dr. Gupta encouraged young journalists to view AI not as a threat but as a partner—one that demands vigilance, ethical responsibility, and critical engagement.
Dr. Sanjay Verma, OSD, Delhi School of Journalism, initiated this lecture series with a vision to fill the gap between academia and industry, and he informed students about the significance of this lecture on AI. Welcoming the speaker, Dr. Sanjay Verma urged students to take forward such debates in their academic and professional journeys. Ms. Epshita Kanaujia, Assistant Professor at DSJ, introduced Dr. Gupta and later extended a formal vote of thanks. Dr. Gupta was felicitated with a book and a shawl as a token of appreciation.

The lecture ended with a group photograph capturing the enthusiasm of students and faculty. The event was smoothly covered by DSJ’s in-house media team—Anshika Mishra, Kritikaa Gandhi, Kumar Sameer Anand, AG Ismaguel Boubacar, Kaushal, Harshwardhan, and Sujit Pal—who managed photography, videography, sound, and graphic design.
