Ahmedabad is witnessing an unprecedented surge in prices as cricket fever grips the city ahead of the much-anticipated Cricket World Cup final between India and Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium. Hotel rates and airfares have skyrocketed, propelled by the soaring demand from cricket enthusiasts eager to witness this monumental showdown on Sunday.
Hotel room tariffs have seen an exponential hike, with prices for a single room reaching a staggering Rs 1.25 lakh, a sharp increase from the typical rates ranging between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh. Notably, luxurious five-star accommodations have inflated to a soaring Rs 2 lakh for the night of the match, marking a significant surge in pricing.
Narendra Somani, President of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Association of Gujarat, underscored the global allure of the World Cup final, attracting spectators from various corners, including Dubai, Australia, and South Africa. With over 1.20 lakh seating capacity at Narendra Modi Stadium, an influx of 30,000 to 40,000 visitors from across the globe is anticipated, surpassing the region’s accommodation capacity.
The high demand for hotel rooms has not only impacted Ahmedabad but also extended to neighboring towns, witnessing a substantial surge in prices. Flight bookings have surged ahead of hotel reservations, contributing to the escalating costs. Five-star hotel rates online have peaked at nearly Rs 2 lakh per night, while even non-starred accommodations are leveraging the heightened demand, multiplying their rates five to sevenfold.
Take, for instance, Hotel Crown on C G Road, which typically offers rooms for Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per night but has now surged its rates to over Rs 20,000. Concurrently, airfares from various destinations to Ahmedabad have experienced a dramatic upsurge. Flights from Chennai, usually priced at Rs 5,000, have surged to Rs 16,000 to Rs 25,000.
Travel agent Manubhai Pancholi emphasized that the surge in airfares is a direct reflection of the overwhelming demand for Ahmedabad from nearly all locations. The fervor among cricket aficionados to witness India’s home-ground final has driven a willingness to pay premium prices for hotels and tickets, creating this unprecedented surge in demand.
