In a press conference held today on March 16, the Election Commission unveiled the schedule for the upcoming general elections across the country. The elections are set to commence on May 13th, with the counting of votes scheduled for June 6th. Emphasizing the importance of a seamless electoral process, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) announced that the elections would be conducted in seven phases.
Addressing queries from the media, the CEC shed light on the delayed Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) assembly elections. He cited discrepancies between the Jammu Kashmir Reorganization Act 2019 and the Delimitation Act as the primary reason for the delay. Following the amendment in December 2023, which finalized the number of seats, preparations for the J&K polls have commenced. The CEC assured that the elections in J&K would be conducted after the general elections without fail.
When questioned about the possibility of holding the J&K polls simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections, the CEC explained the logistical challenge of arranging adequate security forces. He highlighted the necessity of sufficient security arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in the region.
The Election Commission’s announcement sets the stage for a crucial electoral process, promising democratic participation across the nation. Stay tuned for further updates as the election season unfolds.
