Afghanistan is currently experiencing a serious humanitarian crisis, with an estimated 6.55 million internally displaced people (IDPs). After Syria, Afghanistan has the second-highest number of displaced people globally, according to this data. TOLO News reported on this information, which was conveyed in a report by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

As of December 31, 2022, over 4.39 million Afghans were internally displaced as a result of conflicts and violence, with an additional 2.16 million displaced due to natural disasters.

Furthermore, as reported by TOLO News, the paper issued a significant warning regarding the potential increase in worldwide displacement over the next three decades.

Malik Khan, who moved to Kabul a few years ago from Laghman province due to violence and insecurity, said, “Our main concern is the lack of assistance for internally displaced individuals. The only assistance we’ve received in the last two years has been 50 kg of oil and 5 kg of peas.”

Meanwhile, according to the TOLO News report, some other displaced people have appealed to the Taliban and humanitarian groups for help.

Another displaced individual, Maryam, has made a plea, stating, “We are asking that the Islamic Emirates provide us with both refuge and support. We are willing to accept the same location if one is provided to us, even if no clinic is available.”

Hayatullah, who moved from Balkh province, said, “We came here hoping to find opportunities and a safe haven for our children. We are facing challenges of water and electricity and our children are unable to go to school. We left the mazar as there were no job opportunities.”

Moreover, Afghans have been leaving their homes due to the country’s poverty, instability, and violence, according to TOLO News.

Additionally, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has recorded an increase in the number of internally displaced individuals in Afghanistan.

According to this group, the country’s internally displaced population totals approximately six million people.
