In a stunning upset, Afghanistan, rapidly emerging as a formidable force in international cricket, secured a significant victory against Pakistan on October 6. The two teams locked horns in the semi-finals of the ongoing T20-format tournament in the Asian Games, setting the stage for an exciting showdown against India in the summit clash scheduled for October 7.
The Afghan side displayed impressive resilience, clinching a four-wicket win by comfortably chasing down a target of 116 runs in the 17th over. Notable contributions came from Noor Ali and Gulbadin Naib, who notched up 33 and 26 runs, respectively.
Opting to bowl first, Afghanistan’s disciplined attack dismantled Pakistan’s top order, limiting them to a meager total of 115 runs before being bowled out in 18 overs. Omair Yousuf (24) and Arafat Minhas (13) were the leading run-scorers for Pakistan, while the remaining batsmen struggled to reach double-digit scores.
Left-arm pacer Fareed Khan stood out as a key performer among the Afghan bowlers, claiming three wickets while conceding a mere 15 runs. Zahir Khan contributed with two wickets for 20 runs, and skipper Naib managed to secure a wicket while conceding 29 runs.
In contrast, the Pakistani bowling unit lacked luster, with Arafat Minhas being the standout performer, registering figures of 2/11 in three overs. Usman Qadir, on the other hand, conceded 20 runs while picking up two wickets.
It’s worth noting that both teams fielded their second-choice players, as their primary playing XIs are currently participating in the ODI World Cup in India. Known as fierce rivals renowned for their closely contested matches, Afghanistan and Pakistan are set to renew their rivalry on October 23 in Hyderabad.
