Aespa’s Winter Nearly Attacked on the Red Carpet at 2023 SBS Gayo Daejeon

A concerning incident took place at the 2023 SBS Gayo Daejeon musical festival when Aespa’s Winter was nearly attacked by an unidentified person. It was due to the quick action taken by the security personnel present at the event that Winter was able to smoothly carry on with her activities at the festival that day.
SBS Gayo Daejeon is a televised music festival held and broadcast by the Seoul Broadcasting System at the end of each year. This program first aired in 1997. This year’s annual South Korean music festival, SBS Gayo Daejeon, was conducted at Inspire Arena, an indoor multipurpose entertainment hall in Incheon, Seoul, on December 25. The MCs for this year’s event consisted of SHINee’s Key, IVE’s Ahn Yu-jin, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER’s Yeonjun. This event also featured an impressive lineup of performing artists such as Stray Kids, TXT, (G)-IDLE, RIIZE, ZEROBASEONE, LE SSERAFIM, IVE, and also AESPA.
AESPA is a four-member South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. Its members are Karina, Giselle, Ningning, and Winter. Since their debut, they have become one of the biggest stars among 4th generation K-pop idols. They have released several hit songs, like “Black Mamba,” “Next Level,” and “Savage,” that have set new records on several music charts worldwide. In May 2023, they released their third extended play, “My World,” which set a record of 2.1 million sales and became the second best-selling album by a Korean girl group.
Their hard work has brought them fame and a huge fandom, whom they lovingly call “MY.” However, along the way, the girls have gained a lot of ‘sasaeng fans’ as well. The term “sasaeng fan” in Korean translates to individuals who are excessively obsessed with their favorite celebrity and go to the length of stalking them. They are universally disliked due to their potential to cause harm to celebrities. In the recent 2023 SBS Gayo Daejeon musical festival, Aespa’s member Winter nearly escaped being harmed by what many believe to be her “sasaeng fan.”
Eyewitnesses have stated that as Winter was walking down the red carpet, a man holding a camera suddenly started to rush towards her in what is believed to be an attempted attack on her. However, the bodyguards swiftly intercepted and detained the man before he could do any harm to the artist. As security tried to escort him out, he kept resisting and attempted to approach Winter, who was shocked by this incident.
Recorded videos of this incident were shared on X, formerly Twitter, which left fans angered by this sasaeng’s behavior. These videos have gained over a million views within a day. One fan wrote that SM should pay attention to this issue because a few days ago, when Winter was live on her Instagram, a sasaeng literally called her and even posted a video about it on Instagram. Another fan pointed out that if security had not stepped in quickly, this incident could’ve escalated further, endangering Winter’s safety. The fan went ahead and wrote that Winter’s security should be strengthened, and necessary action should be taken against that individual.
