Kannada actress Ranya Rao was arrested on Wednesday at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly smuggling gold from Dubai. Authorities seized nearly 15 kilograms of gold worth ₹12.56 crore from her possession. As the investigation unfolds, more startling revelations have emerged.

Rao, the stepdaughter of senior Karnataka IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, reportedly traveled to Dubai 30 times in the past year, allegedly bringing back several kilograms of gold on each trip. According to an India Today report, she was paid ₹1 lakh per kilogram of smuggled gold, earning approximately ₹12 to ₹13 lakh per trip.

Investigators discovered that Rao repeatedly used modified jackets and waist belts to conceal the gold during her smuggling operations. At the time of her arrest by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), she was found hiding the gold in her modified jacket. Officials had reportedly been monitoring her movements for some time due to her frequent Dubai trips. She was intercepted by DRI officers just before clearing airport security upon her return on Wednesday.

During questioning, Rao identified herself as the daughter of IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, who serves as DGP of the Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation. However, based on prior intelligence, officials searched her and recovered the gold.

The total seizure in the case, including assets worth ₹4.73 crore, amounted to ₹17.29 crore. Meanwhile, Ramachandra Rao expressed shock over his stepdaughter’s arrest, stating that he was unaware of her activities and had learned about the incident through the media. He emphasised that she lived separately with her husband and assured that the law would take its course.
