The actor Chris Gauthier, a Canadian who starred in Eureka, Smallville, and Once Upon a Time, has passed away. According to the actor’s management, he passed away on February 23 after a brief illness. He was 48 years old. The actor leaves behind his spouse and kids.
TriStar Appearances’ Chad Colvin verified the news in a Facebook posting, writing, “I cried tears of disbelief for hours when his wife reached out to me yesterday with the news. It took me until now to completely prepare myself both emotionally and mentally in order to write this.”
Chad omitted to mention Gauthier’s precise cause of death. “Chris was the epitome of what the textbook called the ideal character actor.. Even if you didn’t know his name, you were familiar with his voice and look and knew that if he was on screen, you were going to have an incredible experience.” The statement continued, “Whether he was on deck with Hook as Smee in Once Upon a Time, or anywhere else, he always gave it his all when the camera was rolling”, tormenting Dean on Supernatural, or standing toe-to-toe against Clark Kent on Smallville as the Toyman.
In addition to the parts that Chad mentioned, Gauthier has television credits from Joe Pickett, Harper’s Island, Sanctuary, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Legends of Tomorrow, and Charmed.
Additionally, Gauthier starred in movies including Freddy vs. Agent Cody Banks, 40 Days and 40 Nights, and Jason.
Tributes abound. “Rest in peace, Chris!,” Instagrammed Colin O’Donoghue, who played Hook opposite Gauthier in “Once Upon a Time”. Brokenhearted! My thoughts and love are with Erin and the boys! My brother, you will be missed! The true commander was you! Gauthier’s friend Corrine Wright noted in a Facebook post shortly after the actor’s passing that he had collaborated with celebrities like Anthony Hopkins and Robin Williams in addition to “a number of other performers who all rave about what a wonderful person he was.”
