Amazon’s well-known ‘Just Walk Out’ technology, which allows shoppers to bypass checkouts, unexpectedly relied on international labour. According to the data, around 1,000 people in India will manually verify up to 70% of Just Walk Out transactions by 2022.

Amazon highlighted the ‘Simply Walk Out’ technology as a remarkable achievement powered purely by computer vision.

According to a recent Business Insider investigation, Amazon’s well-known ‘Just Walk Out’ technology, which allowed shoppers to avoid traditional checkouts at its stores, surreptitiously depended on Indian human workers to execute the task manually.

According to The Information, over 1,000 staff in India were charged with examining what consumers picked up, placed down, and eventually walked away with from Amazon’s Just Walk Out-enabled storefronts.

While Amazon hailed the technology as a game-changing breakthrough powered purely by computer vision, a large part of Just Walk Out sales required manual inspection by the team in India. According to an unidentified person knowledgeable about the technology, around 700 out of every 1,000 Just Walk Out transactions will need to be confirmed by these workers in 2022.

However, an Amazon spokeswoman denied this assertion, claiming that the India-based team was largely involved in training the model used for Just Walk Out. “Associates may also validate a small minority of shopping visits where our computer vision technology cannot determine with complete confidence an individual’s purchases,” the representative stated, according to Business Insider.

The disclosure comes as Amazon prepares to phase out Just Walk Out technology at its Amazon Fresh locations in favor of Dash Carts, The Information reports. These smart shopping carts will let consumers escape checkout lines by automatically monitoring and billing for their purchases, offering an alternative to the Just Walk Out experience.

According to the Business Insider report, an Amazon spokesperson explained the motivation behind the transition, stating that customers wanted additional features such as easily locating nearby products and deals, viewing their receipts while shopping, and knowing their savings, all of which Dash Carts provide.
