The alliance between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress in Haryana has encountered a critical issue over seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming October 5 Assembly elections. The two parties, part of the broader opposition INDIA alliance, are struggling to finalize how many seats each will contest, with AAP pushing for more seats than Congress is willing to offer.

Disagreement Over Seat Distribution

Sources close to the AAP have revealed that the party is dissatisfied with Congress’s reluctance to offer additional seats for AAP candidates in the state. AAP leaders have suggested that if Congress sticks to the current arrangement, where AAP gets only a few seats, the alliance may not materialize. As a result, AAP may contest as many as 50 out of the 90 seats on its own, potentially disrupting the coalition.

Haryana has a 90-member assembly, and in the last state election, Congress won 31 seats while AAP did not secure any. In the most recent Lok Sabha elections, AAP’s performance was disappointing, as the party contested only one seat and failed to win, while Congress managed to win five out of the nine seats it contested.

AAP’s Strategy and Possible New Faces

Reports suggest that AAP may soon announce its first set of candidates, many of whom may be leaders who previously belonged to Congress and the BJP. Discontented leaders from these parties are expected to switch sides and contest on AAP tickets, which could provide a boost to the party.

Currently, AAP is aiming to contest around 5-7 seats as part of an alliance. However, if their demand for more seats is not met, they are prepared to go solo in a larger number of constituencies. AAP sources feel that without sufficient seats, they will not have the opportunity to make an impact in Haryana.

Election Context and Timeline

The Haryana Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, 2024, after the Election Commission moved the date from October 1. This change was made to respect the traditions of the Bishnoi community, which plays a key role in three regions of the state. Candidates must submit their nominations by September 12.

The outcome of these seat-sharing discussions could impact not only the Haryana Assembly elections but also the broader dynamics of opposition unity in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections. As the INDIA alliance seeks to challenge the ruling BJP at the national level, tensions between its key members in states like Haryana may pose challenges to maintaining a united front.

If AAP and Congress fail to reach an agreement, the electoral contest in Haryana may become more fragmented, with both parties competing against each other and potentially weakening the opposition vote.
