A.S. Roma have officially parted ways with their first-team head coach, José Mourinho, this afternoon. This came as a result of a string of poor performances from Roma, losing 3-1 to Milan away at the San Siro in their latest fixture. “The Special One,” out of a grand total of 138 games he coached the club for, won 68, drew 31, and lost 39, adding up for a win rate of 49.3%. His 1.70 points-per-game record is also the lowest for any Roma manager in the last 11 years. Yet, stats can only tell us so much. The very fact that he wasn’t allotted anything as a transfer budget this season and the mediocrity of the players at the club can speak volumes about Roma’s abysmal performances on the pitch this season.

As it stands, Roma are out of the Coppa Italia after that 1-0 loss to city rivals Lazio and have qualified for the Playoff rounds of the Europa League. One look at their league position will also make anyone question, “What’s going wrong?” They are 9th in Serie A currently but are only 5 points away from a Champions League spot. Roma could’ve also kept José until the end of the season, and then who knows, maybe we wouldn’t even be thinking of him getting sacked.

It is indeed very viable to look at the prospects of Roma qualifying for the Champions League through Serie A, by winning the Europa League, or even both. Mourinho has a winner’s acumen and knows how to win trophies, exemplifying it once again by winning the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022 and reaching the final of the Europa League the very next year. This is a huge deal for a club that hadn’t reached a European final in 31 years and had never won one until José won them the Conference League and took them to back-to-back European finals.

What’s Next for The Special One?

According to numerous sources, José could move to a club in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia being the prime destination, according to rumors. International management is also being speculated as a serious possibility, with names like Portugal and England being thrown in the mix. Mourinho is still one of the very top names when it comes to football management and, therefore, one could also see him sit tight till the end of the season and return to either Chelsea or Manchester United. A return to either one of these two is feasible for Mourinho, as both clubs are under new owners/administration. Chelsea was bought up from Roman Abramovich by the American billionaire Todd Boehly, and the Glazers have sold 25% of the club’s stake, while also delegating all important responsibilities to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the C.E.O. of INEOS Chemicals.

What’s Next for Roma?

Roma has found an ad-hoc resolve for their managerial vacancy by appointing club legend Daniele De Rossi as their new head coach at least until June 2024. De Rossi has won the Euro 2020 championship with Italy as an assistant under Roberto Mancini. However, he does not have any first-team coaching experience. Roma hopes to cover his inexperience with the fact that he is a fan-favorite; hence, the fans and supporters of the club will be quick to back him. The question, however, is about whether he can improve the team’s performances on the pitch or not, since the “Giallorossi” are not in form and up to their best. Having played for Roma before, will he be able to bring back the feeling of being a “Romanista” that Mourinho left at the club?

Will Roma regret sacking Mourinho? And will he find greener pastures?

We’ll find out at the end of the season.
