Parts of China’s Xinjiang province were hit by a powerful sandstorm that reduced visibility to less than 100 meters and turned the sky orange. For the safety of drivers, emergency traffic regulations were put into effect by the authorities.

A warning for severe winds and sandstorms has been issued by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA). It said that temperature dips would be the most severe until February 22 and raised the alert to the highest level.

The sandstorm in Turpan, Xinjiang caused damage to vehicles, and many drivers became stopped on the road as a result of the thick, blowing sand reducing vision, according to a report by the Beijing-based CGTN news station. Police and fire department workers evacuated them.

The report also stated that haze covered the city of Hami and that sand and dust covered the sky early on February 17.

Other than Xinjiang, Shaanxi province’s cities, including the capital Xi’an, were blanketed in dust, while Jiuquan city in Gansu province’s roadways were closed due to a sandstorm, trapping travelers on the roads.
