A Kanpur native allegedly died by suicide in a Mumbai hotel amid a marital dispute, prompting his mother to pen an emotional note expressing her grief. The incident has reignited discussions about the lack of gender-neutral laws to protect men in marital conflicts, following several similar cases in recent months.
“Today, I feel like a living corpse. You may see me as alive, but in truth, I am dead,” the grieving mother wrote in a heartfelt Facebook post. She added that her “life is over now” after losing her son.
“My son left me. I have now become a living corpse. He was supposed to perform my last rites, but today, on March 2, I performed his at ‘ECO-MOKSHA’ in Mumbai. My daughter conducted her elder brother’s last rites. Please give me and my daughter the strength to bear this immense loss,” she wrote.
Identifying herself as a women’s rights activist, she shared her journey of struggle, stating that she was arrested at 18 and spent her life fighting for justice. Through her organization, Sakhi Kendra, and other efforts, she claimed to have helped over 46,000 women, secured justice for more than 37,000, and provided employment and training to thousands.
Despite dedicating her life to helping others, she said she never sought wealth and raised her two children alone. “I never complained to God. My son was my everything—my friend, my companion, and my strength,” she wrote.
She also mentioned that several actors and filmmakers attended her son’s funeral, emphasising how many people considered him family. However, he did not confide in anyone about his decision to end his life.
The mother has filed a complaint against her daughter-in-law and another relative, both named in her son’s suicide note. They have been charged with abetment to suicide, though no arrests have been made.
The 41-year-old man, a social worker from Kanpur, was staying at a five-star hotel in Vile Parle (East) for two days before allegedly taking his life on March 3. Mumbai Police, upon checking his phone, discovered a note blaming his wife and maternal aunt for his death. He also mentioned enduring many struggles in life.
Preliminary investigations revealed that he had suffered business losses and was dealing with a family dispute. Based on his mother’s statement, police have registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
