A Growing Concern: Is India Safe for Women?
Being born is easy, but growing up as a woman is difficult.

Last Friday, India was shocked by tragic news. A 31-year-old postgraduate trainee was brutally raped and murdered in the seminar hall at KR Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The accused was a civic volunteer at the hospital.
After hearing this news, social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube began their protests. However, the question remains: will we forget about her after just a few days?
“India is celebrating its 78th Independence Day, but even after 78 years, there is still no safety for women in this nation. If a woman is not safe in her workplace, how can we claim that this country is safe for women?”
The Times of India has reported that the National Commission for Women (NCW) has registered 28,811 complaints of crimes against women. Out of those, 4,797 were dowry harassment complaints, 2,349 were molestation complaints, and there were 1,537 cases of rape and attempted rape. These 1,537 cases are just the tip of the iceberg, so it’s concerning to think about the number of unreported rape cases in India.
During the ongoing doctors’ protests, something unfavorable is happening on the other side. Since August 25, 2017, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the leader of Dera Sacha Sauda, has been serving a 20-year jail sentence for the rape of two female disciples. He has been granted furlough for 21 days, marking his 10th instance of being granted furlough since his first conviction in 2017. This latest instance came just two months ahead of assembly elections in Haryana. On Tuesday morning, he was released from Rohtak’s Sunaria jail, where he has served a total of 235 days out of jail.
Yes, this is happening in India. We are fighting for justice, but at the same time, justice is being delayed.
Yesterday, it was reported that in Karnataka, a teacher attempted to rape an 11-year-old girl who was studying in 5th grade. The girl was attacked when she went back to her class after the midday meal.
Schools and workplaces are not safe for women. Should she cut her wings and stay inside the nest?
In 2012, we witnessed a Nirbhaya-like incident. From 2012 to 2020, until she received justice, we all spoke with the same urgency, saying, ‘We don’t want any more Nirbhayas in our country.’ However, what has happened today is that we have seen another woman in a similar situation. But remember one thing, the truth cannot remain hidden forever. One day, it will come to light, and on that day, she will receive justice, or rather, we will receive justice.
