Hours before TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee started a rally in Hooghly on Monday, a 13-year-old boy was killed and two of his companions were gravely injured in an explosion at Pandua in Bengal’s Hooghly district. This happened when the boys mistook a crude bomb for a ball, according to Falguni Banerjee.

Police later revealed that the bomb was intended for the father of one of the boys and that they had detained his ex-wife. The BJP and TMC had initially started a blame game, with one party accusing the other of stockpiling explosives ahead of the May 20 third phase of the Lok Sabha poll.

The grave incident took place around 8:30 a.m. while Raj Biswas, a Class VI student, was playing with 11-year-old Rupam Ballabh and Sourav Chowdhury, 12. They were playing by a pond in Rupam’s backyard in Pandua Netaji Colony when the explosion occurred.

The old rivalry between the TMC and BJP political conflict in Bengal was sparked by a blast. The locals rushed the kids to the hospital; Raj Biswas was pronounced dead there. The other two boys suffered serious injuries to their hands and legs. Both boys were taken to a larger hospital in Chinsurah town.

According to their family relatives, Raj was spending his summer vacation at his maternal uncle’s house in Pandua. He was originally from the nearby town of Burdwan.

Further questioning by the local Hooghly Rural SP, Kamanasish Sen, revealed that they had taken Rita Ballabh into custody after receiving a complaint from the parents against two individuals. The police are still searching for the culprit.

Sukhdeb Ballabh, Rupam’s father, stated that his ex-wife and her boyfriend—a Bihar criminal—were responsible for planting the bomb. Sukhdeb Ballabh further accused that it was meant for him. Political fervour was aroused by the blast’s timing relative to Abhishek’s rally in the area. The BJP sought an NIA investigation and closed the adjacent GT Road.

In addition to visiting Raj, BJP Hooghly LS candidate Locket Chatterjee said that the TMC might have sensed it and stockpiled bombs to create disruptions. It didn’t take long for a counterattack from TMC. But the question remains: how safe is West Bengal?
