The US House of Representatives passed a bill to sanction the International Criminal Court. The Republican-led US House of Congress passed legislation on the 4th of June that would sanction the ICC, i.e., the International Criminal Court, over one of its prosecutors seeking arrest warrants for many Israeli officials, including the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, over his war in Gaza. The vote count was 247 to 155, with 42 Democrats in support of the Republicans. There were no Republican “nay” votes; 2 voted “present.”
This measure is not expected to become a law but reflects the opinion of lawmakers, which is in support of Israel amid international pressure and a lot of criticism. Although this bill is not expected to reach the Senate to become a law, as the Senate is controlled by Biden and his fellow Democrats.
This legislation included sanctions on people involved in ICC prosecutions of American citizens and citizens of countries that are allies of the US, including Israel. The sanctions would consist of blocking the entry of ICC officials into the US, revoking their US visas, and restricting them from US property transactions.
Israel was dragged to ICC after its war in Gaza, where it has been accused of crimes against humanity.
