The recent verdict by the Supreme Court of India on same-sex marriage has sparked a wave of conversations and hopes for a more inclusive and accepting society. While the court’s decision refrained from legalizing weddings between queer couples and granting them the right to adopt children, many individuals, including renowned Indian athlete Dutee Chand, see this as a stepping stone towards broader change.
Dutee Chand, a champion sprinter, is one of the notable figures who had been eagerly awaiting the court’s verdict. While the outcome didn’t align with her expectations, she remains hopeful that the Indian Parliament will pass laws to make same-sex marriages legal in the country.
In her statement, Dutee Chand expressed her desire to marry her partner, Monalisa, and emphasized that their love and commitment are no different from any other couple’s. “I plan to marry my partner Monalisa. But the decision of the top court has upset all plans. I have been living with Monalisa for five years. We are happy together, and as adults, we have every right to make our own decisions. We hope Parliament passes a law allowing same-sex marriages,” she shared with Times of India.
While Dutee’s parents may not fully support her same-sex relationship with Monalisa, they welcomed the Supreme Court’s verdict. It’s worth noting that societal attitudes are diverse and evolving, and acceptance varies from one family to another.
Dutee Chand firmly believes that everyone should have the right to marry the person they love, irrespective of gender. She stressed the importance of individual choices and highlighted that many countries have already legalized same-sex marriages.
“We are not forcing anyone to be in a relationship with us. We do it by our choice. I think we should also be allowed to lead a life as per our choice. Why can’t we (those in non-heterosexual relationships) lead a normal life? Several countries have granted recognition to same-sex marriage, what is the problem to legalize it in India?” she questioned.
Dutee further advocated for the rights of queer individuals, drawing parallels with their right to vote. She passionately stated, “Like the queer people have the right to vote, they should also be allowed to marry a person of their choice.” Her words underscore the need for equal treatment and acceptance of diverse relationships in society.
While the Supreme Court’s decision may not have brought immediate legalization of same-sex marriages, it has ignited a crucial conversation about LGBTQ+ rights in India. Dutee Chand’s optimism for change through legislative means and her commitment to her own love story stand as an inspiration for a more inclusive and understanding society. She has also welcomed the court’s direction to sensitize the public about the rights of queer people and create safe spaces for queer couples, a step in the right direction towards a more accepting society.
