8 AAP MLAs Resigned from the Party Just Days Ahead of the Delhi Elections
AAP replaced 20 sitting MLAs and nominated candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress in certain constituencies.
Delhi: 8 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs resigned on Friday after being denied tickets for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. The legislators who quit the Arvind Kejriwal-led party include Girish Soni (Madipur), Rohit Kumar Mehraulia (Trilokpuri), Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar), Rajesh Rishi (Janakpuri), Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli), Bhavna Gaur (Palam), Pawan Kumar Sharma (Adarsh Nagar), and B.S. Joon (Bijwasan).
AAP, contesting all 70 seats in the national capital, has dropped 20 incumbent MLAs, replacing them with candidates from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress in some constituencies. The elections are scheduled for February 5, with vote counting on February 8.
Girish Soni, the outgoing Madipur MLA, criticised internal party affairs, referring to controversies like “Sheeshmahal” and questioned whether AAP leaders still represented “common people.” Rohit Kumar Mehraulia from Trilokpuri accused AAP of exploiting the Dalit/Valmiki community and failing to deliver on employment promises.
Madan Lal (Kasturba Nagar) and Bhavna Gaur (Palam) expressed disappointment over being denied tickets, stating they had lost faith in Kejriwal and the party. Rajesh Rishi (Janakpuri) accused AAP of abandoning its founding principles of transparency and corruption-free governance.
Pawan Kumar Sharma (Adarsh Nagar) lamented the party’s departure from its original values, while B.S. Joon (Bijwasan) cited increasing centralisation, lack of internal democracy, and opacity within AAP.
Naresh Yadav (Mehrauli) explicitly pointed to corruption as the reason for his departure, stating that AAP, which emerged from Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement, had strayed from its mission of eliminating corruption from Delhi and the country.
