Amid a surge of hoax bomb threats targeting Indian airlines, officials from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) met with airline representatives at the agency’s headquarters in Delhi on Saturday, according to ANI. During the meeting, the airline officials discussed the challenges posed by the series of hoax bomb threats with BCAS Director General Zulfiqar Hasan. They also raised concerns about potential airport congestion during the festive season due to security measures.

In response, Hasan directed airlines to strictly adhere to safety and security protocols. BCAS officials reassured the airlines that they are collaborating with relevant agencies to identify the root cause of the threats. After the meeting, Hasan told ANI that the safety procedures in place to handle such threats are robust, emphasizing that Indian airspace is secure and passengers should fly without worry. “The existing protocols are effective and being strictly followed,” Hasan said, adding, “We encourage passengers to continue flying with confidence.”

In recent days, nearly 70 flights operated by Indian carriers have been subjected to hoax bomb threats, leading to flight diversions and re-screening of passengers, resulting in significant delays and inconvenience. These threats have also caused substantial financial losses, with estimates running into crores of rupees.

Earlier this week, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu confirmed that law enforcement agencies are actively investigating all cases of bomb threats, and the government is closely monitoring the situation. The Union government is also considering increasing the deployment of air marshals on flights while investigative agencies look into potential patterns in the threats.
