Bihar: Seven devotees, including three women, lost their lives in a stampede at a temple in Bihar’s Jehanabad district last night, reportedly due to the use of force to control the crowd. At least 16 people were injured during the incident at the Baba Sideshwar Nath temple in Baravar Hills. However, the authorities have denied any negligence on their part.
Diwakar Kumar Vishwakarma, the town inspector of Jehanabad, confirmed that seven bodies were brought to the Jehanabad Post-mortem House.
The devotees had gathered at the temple for an annual consecration event held during the holy month of Shravan. Visuals from Jehanabad depicted grieving families mourning their loss, while the injured were being treated at the local Makhdumpur and Sadar hospitals. A relative of one of the victims told the media that the stampede occurred due to inadequate arrangements by the administration. According to them, some NCC (National Cadet Corps) volunteers involved in crowd management used ‘lathis’ on the devotees, which triggered the stampede. Locals fear that the death toll may rise.
One devotee present at the temple claimed that the lathi charge by volunteers followed a fight involving a flower seller, which led to the stampede. He also alleged that there was no presence of administration officials. “This happened due to the negligence of the police administration,” he alleged.
However, Vikash Kumar, the sub-divisional officer (SDO) of Jehanabad, denied that NCC volunteers used lathis to control the crowd.
“Nothing like that happened. This was an unfortunate incident. There was strict vigilance. Adequate arrangements, including the NCC,, civil deputations, and medical teams, were made. We will provide more details after the post-mortem,” said Mr. Kumar.
