Tokyo: A strong earthquake of 7.1 magnitude occurred on Kyushu island in the south of Japan. Due to the earthquake, a tsunami warning has been issued for the eastern and southern coast of Kyushu island and the southern coast of Shikoku. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), two major earthquakes occurred one after the other in Japan’s southern island of Kyushu on Thursday morning. The first earthquake was of 6.9 magnitude. Shortly thereafter, a second earthquake occurred, whose intensity was 7.1.
Due to the seismic activity, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued a tsunami warning for the island’s coastal area. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 and its epicenter was at a depth of about 30 kilometers off the east coast of Kyushu, Japan’s southern main island.
The two earthquakes have prompted a warning to be issued predicting waves as high as 1 meter along the southern coast of Kyushu and nearby Shikoku island.
The government constituted a task force
The Japanese government has also formed a special task force for rescue operations. Japan is located near the Pacific Ocean’s Ring of Fire, making it one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world. In March 2011, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastated large areas of Japan’s northeastern coast. 20,000 people were killed in the disaster. Its Fukushima nuclear plant was also damaged.
Earthquakes and tsunamis may come again
Japan’s meteorological department has warned that another wave of earthquakes may occur. After the earthquake, officials issued a tsunami warning. Officials have asked citizens to stay in safe places. It is being claimed that two major earthquakes have occurred together for the first time.
There are reports of much damage due to a 7.1 magnitude earthquake on the southern island of Kyushu near Miyasaki, Japan. The pictures after the earthquake are heart-wrenching. In the pictures, screaming and shouting can be seen in the streets of the city. The vehicles running on the roads are seen moving like toys.
At the beginning of the year, on January 1, an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude occurred in Japan. In which 318 people died and 1300 people were injured. The earthquake also caused a fire at many places in Ishikawa, due to which 200 buildings were burnt.
Why are there so many earthquakes in Japan?
The Japanese archipelago is located in an area where several continental and oceanic plates meet, causing frequent earthquakes and numerous volcanoes and hot springs throughout Japan. When earthquakes occur under or near the ocean, they can cause tsunamis.
