The prolonged war in Gaza seems to have no end. Nearly 39 people in Gaza have been killed in an Israeli strike. On Saturday, Israel launched airstrikes in northern Gaza. The rescue team immediately scrambled into the regions to find survivors of the attack and recover missing bodies.
Fadel Naem, director of the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, told the press that nearly three dozen bodies had arrived at the hospital. The Palestinian Civil Defense, an emergency group active in Gaza, said they were working to find survivors in the attacked zone, Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City. The group has already dug out several bodies and is searching for the remaining ones.
Israel confirmed that its fighter jets struck two Hamas military sites in Gaza City but did not elaborate further.
This was the second consecutive attack in just two weeks. Last week, nearly 25 people were killed in a strike on a tent camp and around 50 people were wounded in a severe attack in southern Rafah. Israel is moving forward in central and southern Gaza and has pushed ahead with its invasion of Rafah, where millions of Palestinians have sought refuge due to the ongoing war.
According to the United Nations, there is no place in Gaza that is safe for civilians. Moreover, the humanitarian situation in the country is getting worse as many families are seeking shelter in makeshift camps, tents, and even broken apartments. There is no proper access to water, food, or medical supplies.
On Saturday, an Israeli strike hit Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa Valley, killing a member of the military wing of al-Jamaa al-Islamiya, or the Islamic Group, a Sunni Muslim faction closely allied with Hamas.
The Israel-Hamas war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants killed 1,200 Israelis and took nearly 250 Israelis as hostages. In retaliation, Israel bombed Hamas-controlled regions, killing nearly 37,400 Palestinians.
An Israeli army spokesperson confirmed that one soldier from the Israeli army was shot dead in the West Bank town of Qalqilya, where Israeli forces fatally shot two militants on Friday. This is the latest flare of violence in the territory since the Israel-Hamas war erupted.
The war has not just flared in Gaza but also in the West Bank, where about 549 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces. On the other hand, nine Israelis have been killed by Palestinians according to UN data.
Israeli nationals are prohibited from entering Qalqilya and other areas of the West Bank that fall under the control of the Palestinian Authority.
Israel said Saturday that it was investigating a separate incident involving the conduct of its soldiers after a video surfaced online showing an injured Palestinian being transported on the hood of an Israeli armored car in the northern West Bank. The army said the man in the video was a wanted suspect and injured during an exchange of fire between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces near the city of Jenin. The man was being transported to a Red Crescent ambulance situated nearby. The army stated that the conduct in the video didn’t “conform to the values” of the army.
