Tahawwur Rana, one of the accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being transported to India aboard a special aircraft, according to sources, after exhausting all legal avenues in the United States. The aircraft is expected to land either tonight or early tomorrow after a scheduled refueling stop.

This development comes after the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed Rana’s plea to halt his extradition. “The application for stay addressed to the Chief Justice and referred to the Court is denied,” stated Monday’s court order. A similar request had also been turned down in March.

Rana, who is a Pakistani-origin businessman and physician, previously cited severe health concerns — including an abdominal aortic aneurysm, Parkinson’s disease with cognitive decline, and a suspected bladder tumor — claiming he might not live long enough to face trial in India. He also expressed fears of being targeted due to perceived national and religious hostility.

Back in February, former U.S. President Donald Trump had confirmed in a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Rana would be brought to justice in India. Rana is known to be associated with Pakistani-American terrorist David Coleman Headley, a key planner of the 26/11 attacks. He has also been linked to terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

Although a U.S. jury acquitted him of direct involvement in the Mumbai attacks, Rana was convicted on two other charges and sentenced to over 10 years in prison. Following deteriorating health during the COVID-19 pandemic, he was released but later rearrested for extradition proceedings — which have now concluded.
