19 Pilgrims Die from Heatstroke During Hajj in Saudi Arabia, 17 Still Missing
In Saudi Arabia during the Hajj pilgrimage, nearly 19 pilgrims died due to extreme heatstroke. Out of these 19 pilgrims, 14 were Jordanian and 5 were Iranian.
Hajj is the annual pilgrimage undertaken by Muslims worldwide to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam’s founder, Prophet Muhammad. It is considered the largest gathering of Muslims, with around 1.8 million people expected to participate in this auspicious pilgrimage this year.
Due to its location in the desert region of the Middle East, Saudi Arabia experiences high temperatures. Every year during Hajj, reports of heatwaves and related issues such as heatstrokes are common. To mitigate these challenges and reduce fatalities, the Saudi Arabian government has constructed climate-controlled areas and deployed medical teams to provide healthcare to pilgrims.
Reports indicate that temperatures in Mecca have frequently exceeded 40°C this year and are projected to reach 47°C.
The government of Jordan has confirmed that 14 of its citizens died due to sunstroke. Jordanian authorities have also reported that 17 citizens are currently missing. They are actively searching for the missing individuals and coordinating with Saudi authorities to handle the deceased in accordance with their families’ wishes.
On the other hand, the Iranian Red Crescent has confirmed the deaths of 5 Iranians, but the specific reasons for their deaths have not been clearly stated.
