New Delhi: A 13-year-old girl, who was adopted as an infant after being found abandoned on a roadside in Odisha, is now accused of killing her adoptive mother with the help of two young men.
According to police, the Class 8 student, along with 21-year-old temple priest Ganesh Rath and 20-year-old Dinesh Sahu, allegedly plotted the murder of 54-year-old Rajalaxmi Kar at their rented home in Paralakhemundi town, Gajapati district, on April 29. The motive was reportedly Rajalaxmi’s objection to the girl’s romantic involvement with the two men, as well as a desire to seize her property.
The trio is said to have first drugged Rajalaxmi using sleeping pills before suffocating her with pillows. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The following day, her body was cremated in Bhubaneswar, with relatives being told that she had died of a heart attack.
The crime remained undiscovered for more than two weeks until Rajalaxmi’s brother, Siba Prasad Mishra, found the girl’s mobile phone in Bhubaneswar. Upon checking it, he discovered Instagram chats that clearly outlined the murder plan, including discussions about killing Rajalaxmi and taking her gold and money. He then filed a police complaint on May 14 at the Paralakhemundi police station.
As the investigation progressed, all three suspects—the teenage girl, Rath, and Sahu—were arrested. Superintendent of Police Jatindra Kumar Panda said that Rajalaxmi and her husband had adopted the girl nearly 14 years ago, having found her abandoned in Bhubaneswar. After her husband died a year later, Rajalaxmi raised the child alone, later relocating to Paralakhemundi to support her daughter’s education at Kendriya Vidyalaya.
In recent years, the girl reportedly got involved with Rath and Sahu, both significantly older. Rajalaxmi strongly disapproved, which caused frequent conflict. Police say Rath manipulated the girl into believing that murdering her mother would eliminate opposition to their relationship and allow them to take over her assets.
On the night of the incident, the girl allegedly gave her mother sleeping pills, and once she fell unconscious, Rath and Sahu were called in. The three then smothered Rajalaxmi. They later told relatives and hospital staff that she had died of a heart attack—a claim that raised no suspicion due to her known heart condition.
Police also revealed that the girl had earlier handed over some of Rajalaxmi’s gold to Rath, who pawned it for around Rs 2.4 lakh. Authorities have recovered approximately 30 grams of gold, three mobile phones, and two pillows believed to have been used in the murder.
