An unprecedented and horrifying event occurred in Australia, with a 12-year-old child reportedly taken by a crocodile. The child was swimming near a remote town called Nganmarriyanga in northern Australia.
A team of specialist search and rescue personnel has been deployed to the area. Initial reports stated the child had been attacked by a crocodile.
The Northern Territory is home to more than 100,000 saltwater crocodiles, but their attacks are uncommon.
After the child’s sudden disappearance, the local police and community members in Nganmarriyanga, previously known as Palumpa and home to only 364 people, began searching for the child.
Now, the rescue team and additional officers are helping the community in the search. There is also a high chance of an aerial search being launched soon if the child is not found.
NT Police Minister Brent Potter stated that the search has now entered the “recovery phase.”
He also added, “It’s a tragic incident for any parent or family member to lose a young child, and especially in circumstances like that, taken by a crocodile.”
In Australia, if crocodiles are found attacking humans, they are usually captured and killed on the spot. Wildlife officers have been authorized to remove the crocodile once located.
Saltwater crocodiles live around the northern coast of Australia, from Broome to Gladstone. They were almost wiped out by hunting, but their numbers have increased since hunting was banned in the 1970s.
Previous crocodile attacks in the Northern Territory include a nine-year-old boy injured in January and a farmer in October, with the last fatal attack occurring in 2018. Queensland has experienced several deadly crocodile attacks in recent years, including a fatal attack on a 16-year-old boy.
